Mr John Hayman, Consultant Clinical Scientist with RefluxUK

John is a Consultant Clinical Scientist in GI Physiology, and one of only three (as of October 2024) Consultant Clinical Scientists on the UK’s Higher Specialist Scientist register for GI Physiology. He is also registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). He has worked in the field for 14 years, originally completing his training in Sheffield by studying a BSc in Clinical Physiology and passing Association of GI Physiology (AGIP) competency examinations for Upper and Lower GI Physiology. He completed an MSc in Advancing Professional Practice in 2020.

His current role is Head of Department at a tertiary GI Physiology department serving the West Midlands and wider area. He is also the Co-Chief Healthcare Scientist for his Trust where he has overall professional accountability for Healthcare Science and a member of the Trusts strategic, operational, and clinical structures.

He performs and interprets all areas of GI Physiology testing. He has also extended his scope of practice by training in Capsule Endoscopy and Capsule Sponge testing and is currently service lead for both services at his Trust.

He acts as a GI Physiology subject matter expert for NHS England in the Midlands and has recently been appointed as a Clinical Lead for GI Physiology and the Black Country ICB for the Midlands Physiological Network where he also sits on the Midlands Physiology Board. He is a named author on the BSG national guidelines for oesophageal manometry and reflux monitoring and is a committee member of the BSG’s AGIP section acting as symposium secretary with responsibility for organising AGIP events.

John joined the RefluxUK team in July 2024 and performs oesophageal physiology testing at Burcot Hall Hospital. He is an active member of the RefluxUK multi-disciplinary team meetings.
